Important Notice: Subscription prices will increase as of October 18, 2024
Paid subscribers before the date will NOT be affected by this change
Hi friends, some news… When the Fed is cutting rates, we’ll be hiking…
Made In Japan will be raising prices as of October 18, 2024
Firstly thank you for your interest and all the great feedback.
It’s been a cool few months experimenting, and figuring out my form of expression. With the encouragement of some supportive readers and as we now exit the test phase, it’s time to make Made In Japan bigger.
To make it economically viable the price will be increased to:
$12/month → $26/month
$120/year → $260/year
Goes without saying but Paid subscribers who join before the deadline will keep their current prices. I couldn’t be more thankful for the endorsement so early on and this is the least I could do as a thank you. Your rates will remain the same even with future price increases (which is likely given my offering is so niche).
The past few months of writing and talking to readers have given me time to figure out what paid subscribers will get.
What you can expect as a Paid Subscriber:
Exclusive Content on Substack: this will be anything from actionable ideas, deep dives, quick takes, or even just profiles of companies I find interesting. Hopefully, I’ll be able to share more ‘on the ground’ research and some interviews with management, and otherwise fascinating individuals and investors - though this might take some time!
Occasional notes and threads on relevant companies: If and when available I will be sharing my summarised notes on companies/management, that might have been excluded from the write-ups. I’ll also share incremental news here.
Priority access: I have been inundated with follow-up/questions from readers/Twitter followers for which I am both delighted and humbled. However, I realized it would take too much time to answer them all with the quality the person deserves. Therefore I’ll be focusing on answering questions from my paid subscribers going forward.
Priority for other services: One of the fun things that happened since starting the substack is that I’ve been doing some consulting (mainly research) for select clients/funds interested in Japan. It’s been great to help navigate others through the terrain. As I only have limited bandwidth for this, as this gets busier I will give my paid subscribers priority. (Though anyone is always welcome to enquire at madeinjapan.invest@gmail.com !)
As a free subscriber, you’ll still get content from me! I hope it’ll be interesting enough for you to join the ‘club’ :) I think the price is reasonable if you consider the translation costs you might incur.
In terms of publishing cadence, as frequently as I want to churn out content, the priority will always be on quality - as such it’ll continue to be sporadic. That said, I’ve got some interesting content in the pipeline and can’t wait to share it with you.
Plans for the future:
Ultimately my vision here is to help people understand Japanese businesses better. Whether through profiling a business, a person, a philosophy, or cultural nuance. Importantly, those that are differentiated ideas. What I continue to feel is that many are still uncomfortable with Japan not necessarily because of a language barrier but more so of a cultural barrier - and this is something I hope to break down, to show just how fascinating some Japanese businesses can be.
I’m considering a more institutional offering in the future where we can have 1x1 calls and more tailored research included.
I am also considering sponsorships for cool Made In Japan products (DM if you know of any!) only if it doesn’t create any Conflict of Interest with my investment write-ups.
As a niche offering, there will likely be further price adjustments in the future as I create more content and build this out. But in the meantime, these are the updates. If you have any questions, please always feel free to reach out.
Thank you again for your support, I’m grateful to be able to share this experience with an incredibly kind and inquisitive crowd! Looking forward to more discussions together. Happy hunting!
Yours Truly,
Made In Japan
